Rare Audemars Piguet Ref.25720OR Starwheel with Engraved Dial in Rose Gold from 1994
The “Star Wheel” watch from Audemars Piguet is reminiscent of the dials of 17th century “wandering hour” watches, where the hours are indicated inside an aperture.
The epicycloid system that allows time to be displayed in this way was first used by the Campani brothers of Rome, who built it into their night clocks in the second half of the 17th century.
At the beginning of the 19th century, this system was brought back into fashion, as it was during the Art Deco period in the 1930s.
Audemars Piguet began producing its “Star Wheel” model in 1991. A few examples were produced in the form of sets of three or four pieces with cases made of various materials.
