The vintage Daytona sits perfectly on any wrists due to its rather thinner profile compared to its contemporary iterations. It’s really hard to imagine how the Daytona was left undesired on shelves back in the 1970s when it was launched, and all that changed when celebrity endorsement backed the Daytona – the actor, Paul Newman.

It is interesting to note that there was no official contract between Newman and Rolex but the gift from Newman’s wife apparently forged an unbreakable bond between Newman and Rolex. Of the multiple variations that the Daytona offers, the Paul Newman Daytona is exceptional collectable with Art Decor numerals, hash marks ending in squares at the end, and a small notch between the outer minute track and the centre of the dial. This piece on hand may not be a Paul Newman, but it certainly is not called a “Big Red” for no reason. Compared to the typical Daytona dial, the Big Red featured the word Daytona bigger in style than others, which is the main reason why this piece is probably second to Paul Newman Daytonas in-terms of collectability.

Vintage Daytona are not necessarily rare but to find one in auction-grade conditions is getting difficult.
