The Patek Philippe Amagnetic series was a result of demand for accurate timekeeping, by professionals working in areas of strong electromagnetism and the growing competition from major watch manufactures in this domain. The first “antimagnetic” wristwatch by Patek Phillipe was launched in 1958, named the “Amagnetic” or the Reference 3417.

This tool watch had certain parts made of nonmagnetic metal, which meant gold in most instances, and a special protective cap that prevents the buildup of magnetic fields within the watch.

The Amagnetic came in 18k gold, rose and white gold – rarely in steel. Reference 3417 was exclusively produced in steel and only about 700 – 800 watches were made. Produced between 1958 to 1960, the Reference 3417 Amagnetic comes in different dials and movements, along with different versions. This piece is rare and important because of all the Amagnetic Reference 3417 ever produced, only 30% of them fronts the “Amagnetic” script on the dial of each version that was launched. For those with the “Amagnetic”signature, every piece is a unique piece on its own as the script was transferred manually after works on the dial is finished, as proven by the different positions in the dial.
